What Trees Know

A tree doesn't read about growth. It doesn't plan its seasons or resist them. It moves through them fully, without negotiation.

In autumn it releases everything it spent the whole year growing. Not reluctantly. Completely. Because holding on through winter would kill it. The release is not loss. It is intelligence.

We treat letting go as failure. As if the leaves falling means something went wrong. But the tree understands that what it releases was never the point. The point was always the roots.

The roots don't change with the seasons. They don't perform. While everything visible is constantly shifting, gained and lost and gained again, the roots go deeper. Quietly. Without announcement. That is where the real growth happens. Underground. Unseen.

Winter looks like death from the outside. Bare, still, empty. But the tree is gathering. Everything that isn't essential has been stripped away, and what remains is exactly what needs to remain. There is a kind of clarity in that bareness that full bloom never offers.

We fear our own winters. The quiet periods, the seasons where nothing seems to be happening, where we have nothing to show. But those are often the periods where something true is being formed. Not for display. For survival. For the next season.

Spring doesn't require effort. It is what happens naturally when the roots have done their work. The tree doesn't motivate itself to bloom. It just does, because everything that needed to fall away has fallen, and everything that needed to deepen has deepened, and now there is simply no other direction but up.

Watch a tree long enough and you stop needing books about growth. The wisdom is just there, rooted in plain sight, living it out season after season whether anyone is watching or not.
